Don's Story
MARCH, 2013
I retired on March 31, 2013, after 50+ years as an educator. With the exception of two years as principal at Monroe High School (1971-73), the first 22 years were in the Bellevue School District. My initial position was as a math teacher at Tyee Junior High School. After four years of teaching, I was named to administrative positions including VP at Tillicum Jr. High, VP at Newport, Bellevue and Interlake High Schools. District administrative positions included Trainer, Professional Development Center, Modernization Coordinator for Interlake High School and Director of Employee Relations.
In April, 1994, I was asked to start Christian Faith School in SeaTac and served as principal and superintendent of that school. In addition, I was also founding administrator of Dominion College, a private four-year liberal arts college. I left those positions in July, 1993 and my wife (Carole) and I worked with a private consultant, advising and consulting with private schools and government educational officials in the U.S., Nigeria, Guatemala, El Salvador, Bulgaria and Albania. I continued doing private consulting and training with schools throughout the Northwest and Canada.
We moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1998, when my wife was employed as Director of Training and Certification for Spalding Education International, a non-profit organization training teachers to teach reading, spelling and writing using a strong phonetic ap...Expand for more
proach. My first year in AZ was spent as principal of a charter school. I then was asked to join Spalding as the Outreach and Marketing Director.
In 2003 we returned to the Northwest and purchased the Huntington Learning Center in Issaquah. Carole continued to be employed by Spalding, working out of our Maple Valley home. In 2007 I sold Huntington and was selected to be the Director of Educational Advancement Academy (EA2), a private one-to-one accredited high school in Bellevue. The name was changed to Brightmont Academy in 2011 when the three EA2 campuses were purchased by Apex Learning. Carole retired from Spalding on December 31, 2012 and retired from full-time work on March 31, 2013. I have since been asked to serve on the Board of Directors for All His Kids, an organization designed to establish new concepts for Christian schools. In addition, I have been asked to consult with other private schools.
We live in Maple Valley and are enjoying not having to get up at 4:30 AM every weekday. Our son, Jeff, his wife, Michelle, live in Renton. Their sons are 23 and 20.. Our daughter, Julie, her husband, Darin, and granddaughter (17) and grandson (13), live in Renton, so our family is very close. Carole and I willcelebrate our 55th wedding anniversary in August, 2022. We have had a truly blessed life and have kept young through working all of our years with young people. Our health continues to remain quite good..
